This month we add two new CDs to our collection. Thanks to Larry Bly, Mark Tintle and Ken LaCapria for lending us their tapes. Our CD #JB143 has shows from WWDC with Johnny Holliday and the Joy Boys from 1974, Ed Walker on WMAL in 1980, and two telephone interviews with Walker and Scott.

And on CD #JB144 we have Rosa Rio (really!) at the organ during a live performance of As The Worm Turns, a 1967 WRC-TV Christmas special, and a Vaughn Monroe festival. If there's one thing we provide, it's plenty of variety! Click any of the links above, or visit the ALLCLIPS page for sound bites from each CD.

In honor of the new year, our featured audio clips were from the 1959 New Year's Eve show. You may have overdone it a little at the office party, so you'll appreciate the help of the WRC Welcome Wagon. Click over to the ALLCLIPS page for more!

Joy Boys at WWDC This month we welcome a new contributor to our audio collection. Mark Tintle loaned us a large box of cassette tapes, mostly from the later Joy Boys shows on WRC and WWDC.

Our first CDs from Mark's collection are #JB140, containing various bits from WRC including a Not Allbright sportscast. We also have #JB141, #JB142 which hold the first Joy Boys show on WWDC. Click over to our ALLCLIPS page to listen to some of these tapes, and stay tuned for more of Mark's collection over the next few months.

Happy Day character We also feature several audio bits starring (and spoofing) weatherman Frank Forrester, and also some clips of the very mellow Have A Happy Day jingle. Click on over to our ALLCLIPS page to listen, and to our History page to read the full stories.

To the person who wrote on this tape box it may mean "nothing" but to Joy Boys fans, this is a very rare item indeed. Our latest contributor, Mark Aceto, has shared with us the original, master tape of the Joy Boys ending theme song! Mark's father, Louis Aceto, was an engineer at WRC radio and TV, and preserved this tape which was originally recorded by Bob Shenton. It contains four different versions of the theme, showing how the harmony was built up a track at a time. Ed Walker sang each vocal part and recorded it on top of the previous parts, then the infamous "tuba" sound effect was added by Donald "Smokey" Stover. We have samples of all four tracks on our ALLCLIPS page this month.

These clips, along with a 1957 aircheck of Ed Walker's "Time For Music" show and a few sound effects, make up our latest CD in the coveted "300 series" of master tapes, #JB308.

AFRTS record label Through a stroke of luck and the wonderfulness of eBay, we have acquired copies of the first six Joy Boys shows which ever aired on the Armed Forces Radio/Television Service (AFRTS). These are now part of our collection, on CDs #JB138 and #JB139. Click over to our ALLCLIPS page for some samples from each CD.

Click here (MP3 file, 301K) to hear Willard and Ed talk about how the Joy Boys show became involved with the AFRTS. This clip is from our first collection CD, Remember The Joy Boys, Volume One.

You can also read more about the AFRTS and how the Joy Boys received international exposure on this Armed Forces radio network.

Listen to many of these, and other sound clips, on our ALLCLIPS page.

A quick guide to our CDs:

  • The 100 series contains some comedy clips and some complete shows, from all time periods. Sound quality varies from excellent to fair.

  • The 200 series contains mostly complete Joy Boys shows from 1960 and 1961. Most are excellent quality (recorded from WRC-FM).

  • The 300 series contains studio master tapes, mostly from around 1972. All are excellent quality.

A big project comes to an end... we have completed transferring the Carpenter Tapes into our Joy Boys CD library! Once again our thanks to Bob Carpenter for providing an incredible set of tapes. This series of CDs (#JB201 through #JB266) contains about 200 complete half-hour Joy Boys shows plus other assorted bits. They include shows aired during nearly every week, from mid-1960 to mid-1961.

So... who else is out there with Joy Boys tapes in their closet? Desk drawer? Under the short leg of the sofa?

We'd really like to get some shows from the mid to late 1960s or early 1970s. Please contact us if you have any Joy Boys tapes in your collection. Thanks!
